Tour description

Just one day to visit the south? Make it count on this Pompeii & Amalfi Coast tour from Rome!

Take the pressure off figuring out logistics on your own and make the most of your short time in beautiful, fascinating southern Italy. On this guided day trip from Rome, you'll embark on an in-depth exploration of the ruins at Pompeii, enjoy a relaxing drive along the beautiful Amalfi Coast, and still have time to let your hair down and explore the jewel that is the seaside town of Positano.

With air-conditioned private transport and skip-the-line tickets to Pompeii, all the details have been handled for you. You'll even have one of our friendly English-speaking tour leaders to accompany you throughout the day, so all you need to worry about is stocking up on limoncello and handmade shoes in Positano.

Discover world-famous ruins with a professional archaeologist guide at Pompeii.

Kick off your Pompeii & Amalfi Coast tour bright and early in central Rome, where you'll meet your tour leader and board a comfortable private minibus for the three-and-a-half-hour drive south. Along the way, you’ll hear stories that will provide context for what you’ll see and experience throughout the day. Sit back, relax, and take in the views of the Italian countryside passing by outside your window.

Once you arrive in Pompeii, your tour leader will hand you over to a certified Pompeii tour guide, carefully chosen from the ranks for their knowledge, enthusiasm and storytelling skills. Together, you’ll explore the best of Pompeii: from the Roman Forum and the brothel (if age appropriate for the group) to the world-famous plaster casts of those killed in the eruption, forever frozen in their final positions. You'll even pay a special visit to the ancient amphitheater, which most other Pompeii tours skip.

Few places send shivers up your spine like this thriving ancient Roman city frozen in time by the volcanic eruption of 79 AD. Twenty feet of volcanic ash preserved Pompeii’s buildings, streets, mosaics, and frescoes for centuries, making it a site unlike any other in Italy: it’s a complete ancient city you can explore just as it was 2,000 years ago! Feel the site come to life with your guide’s dramatic stories and fascinating anecdotes about what life was like before and during the eruption.

Take in once-in-a-lifetime views on Italy's most scenic drive along the Amalfi Coast.

We time your visit to Pompeii in order to avoid the worst crowds of the day, so either before or after your Pompeii tour, you'll head further south. Revel in the stunning views and exciting twists and turns of a panoramic drive down the Amalfi Coast, hearing stories along the way about life in this beautiful region of Italy along with background information about our next stop: lovely Positano*.

A pastel resort town perched on the cliffs, Positano is world-renowned for its romance and elegance, and you'll have plenty of free time to explore it on your own. Follow in the footsteps of Shelley, Goethe, Steinbeck, and the town’s myriad other famous visitors as you climb winding staircases and explore narrow streets. Peek into upscale boutiques, order custom-made sandals from a local artisan, cool off with a dip in the clear waters (bring your swimsuit!), or relax over a fresh seafood lunch—all surrounded by some of the most picturesque and idyllic views you’ll ever see.

Your Pompeii & Amalfi Coast tour will be a highlight of your Roman holiday.

From the moment you arrive at our meeting point in central Rome to when you return that evening—with a full stomach and head filled with vistas and history—you’re in excellent hands.

We’ve organized comfortable, air-conditioned transport in a small, private bus—much easier than larger coaches for navigating the winding Amalfi Coast roads. Additionally, your group will be small, with a maximum of only 18 people for an intimate experience that will help you get to know your guide and fellow travelers.

For your Pompeii tour, you'll head straight into the site with skip-the-line tickets so you don't have to waste precious time waiting in line. And if it’s busy in Pompeii in the morning (as it sometimes can be with cruise ship arrivals) we’ll be flexible, reversing the order of your day trip and heading to the coast first to be sure that you’re getting the best experience.

The most important element of any tour, though, is your guide—which is why we’ve spent years building a team of the best, most passionate, fun and enthusiastic tour leaders in the business. So sit back, relax and enjoy yourself, safe in the knowledge that you’re getting the best possible experience of southern Italy on our hassle-free Pompeii and Amalfi Coast tour from Rome.

*Please note: In the low season (November through late March), most of the businesses in Positano town close, making the town rather uneventful to visit. During this time, we will visit the town of Amalfi or Sorrento instead, where you'll have plenty of options for lunch and shopping.

Please note that this description is an example and your experience may vary depending on the season, day of the week, and group size. Regardless of where your tour goes, you always have an excellent experience.

The tour was amazing and our guide Cosimo made the experience even better. He also recommended a restaurant in Rome where we had the best meal we had in Rome. The guide at Pompeii was very knowledgeable and also made history fun. Highly recommend the tour.

Firstly it's a small group which is excellent. The amalfi was breathtaking and beautiful to get around but be prepared it is very Touristy and very busy with small narrow walk ways. The shops sell really beautiful things you can't find in other countries and the beach is lovely for a swim. Pompei was the highlight, I wish we had longer because there is so much to see and do. We had a different guide specifically for Pompei and she was a wealth of knowledge you could tell she was passionate and it makes you feel passionate. The actual tour guide from the company was very nice but didn't add anything to the day. Essentially just a chaperone but an English speaking bus driver could do the same. Overall it's a long but rewarding day.

This tour was amazing. Positano is a must visit as is Pompeii and this tour combines two great locations, taking care of the drive to Campania Region and providing two wonderful guides in Andy, who accompanied us for the day & Marianna, the archaeologist guide in Pompeii. & Paola our driver ensured our safety every part of the drive. Andy is extremely knowledgeable, with the utmost professionalism, ensuring he provided the perfect amount of fascinating history to us on our drive to, and at, locations. Highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Rome and who wants to make the most of time available.

Great tour. The day is a bit long, but you stop every 1-2 hours. Pompei guide was very knowledgeable. Bus is a bit cold so bring a sweatshirt.
