Day Trip from Florence to Fiesole

Want to know more? Here’s what to do, and see, on your perfect day trip to Fiesole from Florence.

Fiesole’s Stunning Monastery And Views

Work up an appetite by walking up to the Monastery of San Francesco, perched at the very top of Fiesole. The climb is steep, winding through narrow streets and stone stairways, but the effort is well worth it for the breath-taking views waiting at the summit.

From the terrace beside the monastery, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most beautiful panoramic vistas of Florence and the Arno Valley, with the city’s red rooftops and the famous dome of the Duomo visible in the distance.

After exploring the monastery, chapel and free museum, you can also take a moment to relax on one of the park benches overlooking the terrace. It’s the perfect spot to sit with a book, enjoy a snack, or simply admire the Tuscan countryside stretching out around you.

When you’re ready to head back down toward the center of Fiesole, take the little path in front of the chapel. This scenic walkway winds gently through a shady park dotted with trees and gardens, offering yet another chance to slow down, stretch your legs, and enjoy the peaceful beauty that makes Fiesole such a rewarding day trip from Florence.

Magnificent Art at the Bandini Museum

If you are a fan of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, then you will also fall in love with the 12th- to 14th-century works at the Bandini Museum at Via Dupré 1 in Fiesole. Here, you will see works from Della Robbia, Taddeo Gaddi, Bernardo Daddi, Lorenzo Monaco and Nardo di Cione.

Roman Ruins and Ampitheater

Alongside the Bandini Museum, you should also check out the Civic Archeology Museum and sites.  You can tour the external grounds of what was once inhabited land dating back to the 2nd century BC, when the Romans conquered the town. (The Etruscan settlement dates even further, to the 9th century BC!).

The archeological area also has an intact amphitheater, which, much more recently, showed operas. There are also remains of a bath and temple, plus more Roman and Greek artefacts in the Civic Museum located at Via Portigiani 1.

Enjoy a Bistecca Fiorentina at Il Fiesolano

Now that you are hungry and ready for a Tuscan lunch or dinner, we recommend eating like a local, and that includes ordering the famous bistecca fiorentina at Il Fiesolano. We love this place so much, we’ve even included it in our list of favorite restaurants in Florence! So sit and enjoy the best steak you’ll ever have. Follow up dessert with window shopping up Via Gramsci.
